The eastern state of West Bengal is preparing for a high-stakes political battle as elections to the 294-member West Bengal Legislative Assembly approach. The polls will determine whether the ruling party manages to retain power for another term or if the opposition succeeds in altering the political landscape of one of India’s most politically significant states.
The election schedule has been announced by the Election Commission of India, formally setting the poll process in motion. According to the schedule, the gazette notification was issued on March 16, marking the beginning of the nomination process. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, while the scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on March 24. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations until March 26, after which the final list of contestants will be published.
Polling in the state will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, when the results will determine the composition of the next government in the state. With 294 seats in the Assembly, the majority mark required to form the government is 148 seats.
